{"id":180,"date":"2011-01-08T07:30:13","date_gmt":"2011-01-08T12:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twosouthernsisters.com\/?p=180"},"modified":"2011-05-14T07:42:11","modified_gmt":"2011-05-14T11:42:11","slug":"mamaw-kahanek%e2%80%99s-christmas-cookies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.frillsandmeals.com\/wordpress\/2011\/01\/mamaw-kahanek%e2%80%99s-christmas-cookies\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamaw Kahanek\u2019s Christmas Cookies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"drop_cap\">I<\/span> am transcribing this recipe from a handwritten note from my (now) 95 year old grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>She no longer lives in her own home and she no longer cooks.\u00a0 But I will always remember my grandmother for her cookies.\u00a0 Even when I was grown, I felt like \u201cLittle Red Riding Hood\u201d when I left her home and headed to the airport with a \u201cbasket\u201d full of cookies.<\/p>\n<p>Mamaw always made me dozens of cookies to take home when I stopped by during a business trip.\u00a0 The \u201cbasket\u201d was always a plastic gallon container with a handle that had once held \u201cgeneric\u201d cherry vanilla ice cream!\u00a0 She would hand it over to me full of layers and layers of cookies separated by wax paper.\u00a0 My kids would always expect this package of heaven when they knew I had stopped by Mamaw and Papaw\u2019s on my way back from a trip.<\/p>\n<p>I am transcribing this directly as she wrote it on her note to me.\u00a0 Even though she is still alive, her handwriting makes me cry.\u00a0 She has good health but she has dementia.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if she would remember making these cookies for her family.\u00a0 But we do.<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 pound dates<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd pound candied cherries<\/li>\n<li>4 slices red &amp; green candied pineapple<\/li>\n<li>1 quart pecans<\/li>\n<li>\u00be cup flour<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon baking powder<\/li>\n<li>Pinch salt<\/li>\n<li>3 egg whites<\/li>\n<li>\u00be cup sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon good vanilla<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mixing bowl, cut up dates, cherries, pineapple and pecans.<\/p>\n<p>Add the flour, baking powder and salt.<\/p>\n<p>Stir until fruit and pineapple andn pecans are wsell coated with the flour.<\/p>\n<p>In another bowl, beat egg whites until stiff.\u00a0 Add sugar a little at a time. Beat until holds peaks.<\/p>\n<p>Add vanilla.\u00a0 Mix this with the fruit mixture.<\/p>\n<p>Shape into balls and bake on greased cookie pan for about 10 minutes in a 350\u00b0 oven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am transcribing this recipe from a handwritten note from my (now) 95 year old grandmother.
